Piton

The story of this side table begins in the southern highlands of Brazil, where dense native forests yield some of the world’s most character-rich hardwoods. Among them, a select few pieces of Jequitibá or Freijó are chosen, not just for their strength, but for the expressive swirls and tonal complexity of their grain. Each board tells a different story, and every table begins with this intimate dialogue between material and maker.

Once harvested, the wood enters a patient drying process. Artisans air-dry each plank under open shelter, allowing it to slowly acclimate to the environment. It’s then transferred to a custom kiln, where controlled heat removes remaining moisture, ensuring that the wood remains stable for decades to come. This step, though invisible in the final piece, is vital—it’s the foundation of the table’s lasting integrity.

With the material ready, the table’s form begins to take shape. Its inspiration lies in the subtle, confident gestures of Brazilian midcentury design, where functionality meets artistic form. The legs are turned on a lathe by hand, their contours inspired by the tapered columns of Oscar Niemeyer’s architecture. Each leg is placed with architectural precision to offer both stability and a sense of lightness.

The tabletop, slightly raised from the base, appears to hover—its softly rounded edges inviting touch. No two surfaces are identical; the natural variation in grain gives each piece a quiet individuality. Once assembled, the entire table is sanded and finished with natural oils and waxes, preserving the wood’s original warmth without obscuring its texture.

Every detail, from joinery to finishing, is guided by a belief in honest materials and timeless design. The result is more than just a table—it’s a sculptural companion that reflects the soul of Brazilian craftsmanship. Equally suited beside a reading chair or as a standalone object, it brings both utility and presence to any space.

Handcrafted in Brazil, this table honors the land it came from—and the hands that brought it to life.
